| Attempts to correct the chromatic difference of focus of the human eye will in-troduce unwanted chromatic parallax if the eye is misalligned with the optical axis of theachromatizing system. Using geometrical optics,we show that the amount of parallax is ap-proximately proportiona1 to the amount of the misallignment of the eye,with the constant ofproportionality equal to the eye's chromaticdifference of refractive error. This prediction wasconfirmed by the experimental detemination of chromatic parallax for two commerciallyavailable achromatizing lenses' On the basis of these result,we calculated that anticipated im-provements in the polychromatic modulation transfer function of the eye offered by achroma-tizing lenses wiIl be canceled by ~o. 4mm of the misalignment between the lens and the eye'Our prediction that further misalignment wou1d severely reduce image quality of the achrom-atized eye was verified by psychophysical measurements of contrasts sensitivity. |
